$2.9 trillion erased. The S&P 500’s biggest one-day dollar wipeout.

Today delivered the S&P 500’s biggest single-day dollar wipeout on record. Companies in the index lost an estimated $2.9 trillion, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The Magnificent Seven alone shed $1.04 trillion. |

Chips led the collapse. Nvidia fell more than 9%, Qualcomm lost 9.5%, and the semiconductor index plunged over 12%.
The AI buildout faces political resistance. Election wins by candidates critical of data centers raised fears that restrictions could slow construction and chip demand.
Yesterday’s relief rally disappeared. The Nasdaq closed in a correction, more than 10% below its October record. Its daily percentage decline was the largest since April 2025.
The record concerns dollars lost in market value. Earlier crashes produced much larger percentage declines. Today’s selling shows how much of the market’s value depends on expectations for AI infrastructure spending.
Massive tech layoffs and buyouts continue.

We covered Microsoft’s buyout offers earlier. Newly revealed Google exit packages and Canva’s sweeping reorganization add to a broader week of workforce reductions. |
Google: voluntary buyouts expanded to employees in Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and Switzerland. Reported this week, the program began in June; the number accepting is unknown.
Canva: 1,271 employees, or 22% of its workforce, are affected by layoffs, relocations, or role changes. The exact number losing their jobs has not been disclosed.
Circle: disclosed a roughly 5% workforce reduction in its November 4 results. Fiserv: said it had cut 3,000 employee and contractor positions since June.
Squarespace: confirmed a workforce reduction of approximately 19% earlier this week.
These announcements combine voluntary departures, layoffs, and reorganizations. They reflect different business decisions, and the companies have not established that AI directly caused every cut.
